Paul Merson has heaped adulation upon Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, labeling the Brazilian the Premier League’s most underrated player. Luiz has been in fine form this season for Villa and scored five league goals from central midfield position.
Manchester City have expressed interest in signing Luiz should they sell Kalvin Phillips next month, although Merson believes it would be difficult to convince Luiz to leave Rangers and return to Etihad Stadium.
Oleksandr Zinchenko
Zinchenko’s commitment to his craft is remarkable; his hunger to reach the top can only be described as fierce. That desire was nurtured during a tough day at Radomyshl Football Academy when, feeling left out by his classmates, he returned home complaining to his mother that no one passed him the ball.

Oleksandr soon returned to the academy and started training again, eventually garnering interest from top clubs such as Manchester City. His perseverance eventually paid off as his talent quickly came into prominence.
City gave him his chance, where he has since 2016 been playing left-back since Benjamin Mendy left for PSV Eindhoven on loan. Since then he has proven his versatility by working alongside Mikel Arteta when the Spaniard was at City. This Ukrainian has all the credentials of someone who will make an impactful difference for any side in England; also his commitment to taking out both his parents for dinner whenever he has time is admirable.
James Maddison
James Maddison may not be household name but Leicester City midfielder is one of the Premier League’s most underrated players. Maddison’s ability to elude players using trickery and disguise is a joy to witness; watch below as Maddison fools Everton’s Dwight McNeil into thinking he will receive with his right foot before performing an expertly executed chop that gains five yards, cannoning off an effort past the far post!
He is known for his precision set-piece deliveries, eye-of-the-needle through balls and excellent weaker foot goals – the latter often punished opponents who drift too far off his path with long range strikes from him.
Maddison has been instrumental in Leicester’s rise this season and their realistic chances of finishing in the top four. If Newcastle come calling this winter, no club in the Premier League wouldn’t welcome his presence; after joining Spurs last summer for just PS40m transfer fee alone!

Douglas Luiz
Paul Merson believes Douglas Luiz to be one of the Premier League’s most underrated players. Villa Park star Luiz has enjoyed an outstanding start to this season, including an outstanding performance against West Ham 4-1 which earned his praise from Merson (former Arsenal midfielder).
Luiz excels at passing possession forward when Aston Villa regain possession. He averages an impressive 4.5 progression passes per 90 minutes – the most in their squad and seventh highest among midfielders across England’s premier league.
At Aston Villa, he’s an impressive ball winner. In fact, only Boubacar Kamara has outdone him in terms of ground duels won this season.
James Chester
Though Aston Villa will always remember legendary figures like Brian Little, Gary Shaw, Jack Grealish and Paul ‘Magic Man’ Merson fondly, there have also been plenty of incredible unheralded heroes at Villa Park who deserve recognition.
Fabian Delph was a prime example. The midfielder who had two stints at Leeds United ultimately joined Aston Villa for PS6million, becoming part of their side that reached the Champions League final in 2018.
Chester has been an incredible asset to Aston Villa this season. His defensive abilities and leadership qualities have been instrumental in their push towards promotion, with Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough showing interest in signing him despite Villa fans wanting him to stay put as long as possible; his experience would prove invaluable next season.
